A) Vocabulario (Vocabulary)

Becoming a Market Trader

A. There are popular misconceptions that all market traders are amazingly wealthy people who have an easy source of income and that theirs is a calling that anyone can follow. Certainly it is a profession which is open to anyone regardless of qualifications and experience, but what is not so widely known is that there are a large number of people who set up as market traders and fail miserably at the first hurdle.

B. Because it is a high profile business, ordinary members of the public see only the easy part, when cash is flowing into the till, and it looks glamorous. This image is cultivated to an extent by the traders themselves, who work hard to present an acceptable public image, so important when dealing face to face with members of the public.

C. The difference between market trading and the majority of other businesses is that success is more a result of hard work and long hours than of cash resources, and it is this that makes it such an attractive proposition to so many people starting off on their own for the first time. So where do you start? This is not such a difficult question as it might seem; in fact most people have the impression that setting up is considerably more complex than it actually is. Perhaps it is an over-simplification to say that all you need is your stall, some stock and a space, but there is very little else.

D. One of the greatest attractions to many budding traders is that they don't have the problems of finding and paying for the running of permanent premises; instead their 'premises', their stall, travels with them to where they know there is a possibility of doing some business. This is hard physical work but naturally a great deal less expensive. However, it should be constantly remembered by the new trader that market trading is not a game. It is not a short cut to riches. It is a business, a business which - with a lot of hard work and determination - can be highly lucrative.

Selling Your Songs

A. The first basic rule is to choose a publisher who is properly in the business of music publishing, and has preferably had at least one or two hits in the recent past. If at all possible, try to call on the publisher in person, but do make an appointment beforehand, even if you simply phone up asking to turn up with your songs in a couple of hours.

B. Sometimes they'll even agree to hear them straight away, but don't bank on it. They might well be prepared to listen to your songs on cassette or compact disc in your presence in the future, or they may ask you to send something to them. At least by ringing them first you'll know the name of the person who will be responsible for assessing your songs.

C. Whichever way you present the songs to a publisher, don't expect them to hear more than three at any one time and definitely put the best one, in your opinion, first. If the first minute or so of the first song is poor, it's very possible that the others won't be heard at all. Always make a copy of your tape, as a publisher might want to hang on to it for someone else in the company to hear, and because it might get lost or damaged.

D. If a publisher keeps your tape for a while, don't think that they're intending to steal your songs, but don't be afraid to find out when they'll be prepared to give you a decision on them. Incidentally, don't waste a publisher's time making excuses for the poor quality of your tapes or your voice before playing the songs. Most songwriters do this but there's really no need. It's the songs the publishers are most interested in and they'll see beyond your performance.

E. If you think a song is suitable for a particular artist, especially one who has had a hit with one of that publisher's songs before, then there is no harm in suggesting this. Publishers like to have ideas set before them as well as the songs, but be sensible and don't bother suggesting that they send the songs to international superstars unless you know they have connections with a particular star.
